Macdonald Fire.. how it all started...

The Macdonald Fire department is a municipal fire department that was established in 1974.

The fire trucks and equipment are centrally located in Sanford, Mb. in the emergency services building. We have firefighters in Sanford and most communities. These firefighters living in the out lying communities respond to the emergency scene from their homes.

The fire department responds to all fires, vehicle accidents and carbon monixde calls in the R.M. of Macdonald.

Firefighters can be dispatched 24 hours a day by means of a voice activated pager from the 911 Centre in Brandon Mb.

1970

Efforts to establish a fire department began in 1970 at a community inprovement meeting held in Sanford when Mr. Neil Simonsen voiced a concern about the need for a local fire department. From that point a community was formed and set out on a fund raising campaign to solicit donations of money and grain from families in the area. Over 90% of the people contacted made donations.

1972

The Provinical Fire Commissioner's Office met with the Municipal council.

1973

A two bay fire hall with a meeting room, office, washroom and furnace room was built.

1974

Early in 1974 a list of individuals were contacted from each of the communities to serve on the fire department. In March of that year a GMC Fire Truck built by Thibault Fire Apparatus arrived complete with equipment and a 1000 gallon water tank. With the hall built, equipment and personel in place, the fire department was a reality.

1978

The Macdonald Fire Department joined the Boyne River Mutual Aid District under the direction of the Manitoba Fire Commissioner's Office, which provided an organized method for the 14 participating fire departments in the area for responding to major fires.

1982

A four wheel drive fire truck was added to the department which is used promarily to fight stubble and grass fires.

1986

Both the fire and ambulance department commenced the use of pagers as a method of notifing personnel. The fire department at that time along with the ambulance responded to motor vehicle accidents.

1987

An addition was built onto the emergency services building and the ambulance was moved into the same facilty.

1992

The municipality purchased a third fire truck built by Fort Garry Industries complete with a 1000 gallon tank and a six man cab.

1993

As a result of fund raising efforts and a grant fom the Federal Government under the JEPP program, a set of Jaws were purchased for vehicle extrication.

1996

A new meeting room was built onto the rear of the emergency services building.

1997

The municipality started with the 911 system located in Brandon Mb.

1999

Is the Macdonald Fire Department 25th anniversary.

As of today we currently have 22 active firefighters with a fleet of 4 Emergency Vehicles
