Equipment Operator
Position Summary:
Reporting to the Manager of Public Works, the Equipment Operator is responsible for clearing pathways of snow in winter, grooming ski trails in winter, gravel checking during the gravel season, and being a spare equipment operator where necessary. This is a full-time position based on 9-hr work day (45 hrs/week); hours 7:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
Requirements:
- Operate New Holland C337 Compact Track Loader with Snow Blower and other attachments.
- Operate Kubota RTV with snowblower, sweeper, and ski trail groomer.
- Operate 20 tonne track excavators with 3D-GPS controls.
- Operate Motor Grader and perform routine summer road maintenance and winter snow plowing.
- Operate other machinery as required.
- Perform daily maintenance and safety checks on equipment.
- Requires extended hours and weekend work.
- Willing and able to work with little supervision.
- Ability to be on call with quick response time is required.
- Any other skills (carpentry, welding, electrical, etc.) would be considered an asset.
- Capable of manual labour and other duties as assigned.
- Ensure shop and work areas are kept clean and organized at all times.
- Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations and work cooperatively and jointly with the rest of the crew.
Responsibilities:
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar and related.
- Performs preventive maintenance on a variety of machinery and vehicles.
- Keeps track of all gravel placed on roadways in the municipality. Acts as a liaison between the Public Works Manager and the gravel haul contractor. Keep detailed documents about amount of gravel was spread and where.
- Filling in as the spare operator. This includes operating a motor grader in both summer and winter, operating an excavator – ditching in summer and clearing snow from ditches in spring, operating 3-yard loaders in both summer and winter, installing LDS, and being a spare for other operators as needed.
- Operating Kubota RTV – Sweeping, snow blowing sidewalks, and grooming ski trails in winter and sweeping sidewalks in spring.
- Completing other tasks such as curb stop maintenance, sign maintenance, town clean up, planting trees, etc.
- Other duties as assigned.

- knowledge of safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work.
- Skilled in operating and maintaining a wide variety of hand, power and shop tools.

- Skilled in estimating necessary materials and equipment to complete assignments.

- Must be able to handle physical requirements of the job and able to work in confined spaces and perform work in harsh weather conditions such as extreme heat/cold.

Working Conditions:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
- Physical strength and ability sufficient to meet job requirements for extended period under uncomfortable conditions in all types of weather in both an automotive shop and outdoor environment.
- Subject to frequent climbing, balancing, reaching, sitting, standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, walking, talking, seeing and hearing.
- Perform repetitive motions including bending, twisting, stepping, pushing and pulling.
- Adverse conditions in work areas include concrete floor, subject to extremes in air temperature, pressure, or humidity, noisy environment, dust, chemicals, machines, vehicle exhaust fumes, gasses, petroleum products, fire, and electrical hazards.
- Ability to stand for an extended period without a significant rest period.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
- Employees must regularly lift and/or carry objects weighing 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or carry objects weighing up to 100 pounds.
- Frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shop, fumes, and airborne particles.
- Ability to work long hours and/or shift working during snow operations spring run-off and emergencies, along with irregular hours during different seasons.
